Day 18 Alice Springs
Day 18 started with us going to see the Ochre Pits. The Ochre Pits is a big mountain made of ochre that has all these different colours in them. Ochre is also what Aboriginals used to paint themselves with. The next place we went to was Ormiston Gorge. It started by a small walk to a swimming hole which was pretty big. After that, we went up the Ghost Gum Lookout walk which goes up the mountains on the sides of Ormiston Gorge and has a lookout which has a view of the entire mountain range. After that, we went to Glen Helen which was a big pool that went through some mountains. To get to it, though, you have to go through a path in 6-foot grasses. To make it worse, there was multiple paths and some of the paths were dead ends, so it took us a while to get there but when we did it was worth-it because it looked really good! After that, we ate lunch overlooking the mountains and started driving about an hour and a half to Palm Valley. On the way, though, we found some wild horses drinking at a pond, which was pretty cool. Once you get to the turn off to Palm Valley, it goes into a dirt path, and it is fully off-road. We had to drive through dried up riverbeds, sandy terrain, lots of rocks and even over a creek with water in it. We drove off-road for about 30 minutes until we got there, but we stopped just a few minutes’ walk out from Palm Valley because there was a big drop with rocks on the bottom and we decided it was best to leave the car back there. After that, we looked around Palm Valley and it looked really good. There were about 8 or 9 palm trees there and there was water there which was unusual because it is usually dry. After we left and got back on the road, it felt so smooth because for the past hour we had been rocking about going over all the rocks and dried riverbeds. Then, we got back to the van and stayed there until it got dark.
