Day 10 Kata Tjuta
Today started at about 10, when we drove to Kata Tjuta which is a mountain range that is made out of the same thing as Uluru. We first drove to the viewing platform so we could see the outside of Kata Tjuta. Then we drove to the Walpa Gorge walk which is about an hour long and is a grade 3/moderate walk. It was a small walk through a gorge in the rock and it surprisingly had a bit of water in it because of all the rains in the Northern Territory. Then we drove to the Valley of the Winds walk. The valley of the winds is a grade 4/difficult walk and it takes about 4 hours to do. It started off by a small flat paved walk past some trees until we got to the first lookout which looks out on the valley in the middle of all the big mountains in Kata Tjuta. Then the walk goes into a dirt track and takes you down into the valley, where you cross a bridge over a small creek and walk over to a narrow walkway between some rocks. Then it goes past some trees that had all these parrots chirping to each other which was really good. The next part was probably the hardest part of the walk as it was a near vertical wall that you had to climb up to get on top of a hill. Then when you keep going, you have to go up a massive staircase which went up a 180 meters t0 the second lookout which looks out on all the trees coming out of a small crevice and into the main valley. Then you go down 180 meters on the other side and walk through the small crevice and into the main valley. When you look at Kata Tjuta from afar, it looks like a line of mountains but it is really a big circle with a valley full of trees and wildlife in the middle. After you walk the pretty flat way all the way through the massive valley, you get back to the mountain from the beginning with the first lookout on it. You need to climb some pretty rough and steep terrain back up to the first lookout and then you walk back the flat paved part from the beginning to the carpark. By the end of it, I was exhausted from the amount of walking and climbing and stumbling I had to do on the walk. By the time we got back, it was about 4 o’clock. After that, we came back to the van and sat in there for about 30 minutes before going to a restaurant to eat dinner and playing a game of Rummikub. After that, I went to bed.
