Day 26 Katherine – Kakadu

We started today by driving out of Katherine to go to Kakadu. The drive took 3 and a half hours and we first stopped in Pine Creek. Pine Creek is the intersection that goes leads to Darwin or Kakadu. It also has lots of old steam trains and the old train station. There was even a diesel engine there. After that, we went to Kakadu. On the drive there, we saw heaps of wildlife and we even saw two water buffalo on the side of the road. When we got to Kakadu, we immediately went into the van and turned the aircon on because it was 34 degrees outside. We looked around the park and then walked to a small walk that goes over the Yellow Water Billabong. There was a small boardwalk looking thing that had big barriers on either side to protect people from saltwater crocodiles in the river. When you look over the side, you could see a lot of big barramundi swimming around which looked good. It would’ve been good to fish there, but the jetty was on the other side of the river so I don’t think you could fish there. When we kept going, we saw several birds. There was a small one with orange wings that could only be found in the very northern areas of Australia. There was also this really big brown bird with a long tail that was wandering around the grass. At the end of the walk, you could see heaps of water beetles swimming around and splashing through the water. On the way back, I saw a barramundi jump out of the water which was pretty cool. When we were walking back, we found a dirt trail that led to the caravan park and on the way through the trail, we saw a wallaby that jumped away from the path when we came. After we got back to the van, we had dinner and just stayed in the van for the rest of the night because it was still 30 degrees when it got dark. Tomorrow we are going on a river cruise down the river at 6 am to see a bunch of animals so we might see some crocodiles.
