Day 27 Kakadu

Today began by getting up at 5:40 am to go on the Yellow Waters River Cruise. When we got there, we went to the dock and got in the boat at about 6:40. When we sailed out of the dock, the sky was a light orange colour even though the sun hadn’t got up yet. We went out of the small channel where the dock was and sailed into the main river system, where we saw a saltwater crocodile floating in the water to the right of the boat. This was the first wild saltwater crocodile I had seen because the other ones I had seen on the trip were contained. Near the beginning of the river, there was a few dead catfish floating at the top of the water that the crocodiles had bitten and used as bait for a bigger animal to come. On the sides, there was tens of thousands of ducks all lining the riverbank and there were heaps of birds that all looked different flying around. There was even a sea eagle that was on top of a dead tree and then flew down to hunt in the river! We saw another crocodile that was on the side of the bank just sitting out of the water as the sun had risen a little bit and it was sunning itself. When we kept going, we came to a lot of mangrove trees that had a lot of vibrant birds in them. There was a Nankeen Night-Heron sitting on one of the roots that I got a photo of but it jumped as soon as I took the photo so it is blurry, and the boat went too far away before I could take a better one. Near the end of the river, there was a dead buffalo that had heaps of crocodiles doing deathrolls on it a few days before. Unfortunately, though, it was just an empty carcass when we came to it and no crocodiles were there. Near the end of the cruise, we went down a different branch of the system and found a saltwater crocodile sitting on the bank with a baby crocodile next to it. The baby crocodile was tiny compared to the adult one! After we got back from the cruise, we went to a small walk in some wetlands with heaps of tropical trees. While we were in the beginning of the walk, a kangaroo jumped past us which was the first one we had seen this trip, because they are allowed to be hunted in the Northern Territory. When we got back, we swam in the pool which was really nice because it was 36 degrees and we had dinner at a fish and chips shop that had crocodile tacos and barramundi. The crocodile had a really weak taste and all you could taste was the barramundi which was nice. After that, we came back to the van and went to sleep. (This was a very long post)
