Day 39 Victoria River – Kununurra
Today we went to Kununurra. It wasn’t too long of a drive, only 3 hours. On the drive, we had to cross the Western Australia border which meant we had to go through the quarantine zone. Basically, someone checks your van and car for things like fresh produce and honey. You aren’t allowed to bring those items across the border because they may contain bacteria that is not in Western Australia and contaminate all in the food in WA. After we got through the quarantine zone, we kept driving about 30 minutes over the border to Kununurra. There are lots of boab trees around, which are big trees with a fat trunk that store lots of water in the trunk. After we set up in the caravan park, we went over to Kelly Knob Lookout, which is on a small mountain that has a full view of all of Kununurra. We sat there for a while, watching the sun getting lower in the horizon until we came back to the caravan park to watch the sun go down on a lake near the back of the park. It looked really scenic and there were lots of birds flying around. Apparently, you can find freshwater crocodiles in there, but we didn’t see any. After the sun had set, thousands of bats started flying overhead in straight lines. There was about 6 or 7 lines and more bats kept flying in for 20 minutes. There were probably about 1,500 bats that flew over. After we looked at the lake, we went over to Kelly’s Bar and Grill for dinner. I had threadfin fish and chips. It actually tasted really good and apparently threadfin is a kind of salmon that you find. After dinner, we came back to the van and went to bed. The best part of this day was that it was actually 26 hours long because we went backwards 2 hours from the time zone!
