Day 4 Port Augusta – Coober Pedy
We started off the day by getting up early so we could get to Coober Pedy in time. But first, we drove for about an hour and a half until we got to Woomera. Woomera is the rocket and missile testing base in Australia and it was really cool. In the main outside bit, there was exhibits of different aircraft and rockets that were used in the war and there was a cage in the side that was full of destroyed parts that came off rockets that they crashed in the Northern Territory. Inside, there was a museum off all the different rockets and missiles and how they work. After we had lunch, we drove to Lake Hart, which is were they launched the rockets that would go into space from. It was really windy there so sand kept going in your eyes and mouth but it was still pretty good, especially since the dust there had turned red now. While we were getting down to the lake, we had to wait for a kilometre long train to go pass, which took 2 minutes with it going about 100 kmh to get past. When we got there, there was massive piles of salt crystals that accumulated from the salt blowing out of the lake. When we were looking at the lake, it started turning pink which was a sign that there was lots of salt in the lake. It was pretty boring while we were driving because we stayed on the same highway the entire time and it was completely straight without turning, plus the terrain stayed the same which didn’t help. While we were driving, we saw some pretty cool thing though. Things like an emu and 2 mirages that looked like real water! After around 4 hours we arrived in Coober Pedy at 5 o’clock which was enough time to set up and have dinner in Nana and Pa’s van. We are staying at Coober Pedy for 2 days so tomorrow we will explore a lot of Coober Pedy.
