Day 42 Kununurra
We started a bit earlier than the other days at Kununurra at 9 am to drive to Wyndham. It was an hour and a half drive, and, on the way, we stopped at Lake Kununurra. Like Lake Argyle, Lake Kununurra is a dam, but it isn’t as big as Lake Argyle. We stayed there for a little bit and then kept driving. The second stop on the way was at the Grotto. The Grotto is a pool of water and in the wet season it fills an entire cavern and has a big waterfall going to it. Since we are in the dry season, though, it had no waterfall, and it was a pretty small pool compared to the wet season. It had about 130 steps down to it and we had to climb over a few rocks to get there which was cool. When we got there, we saw there was a cane toad sitting in a shallow bit of water. The only other cane toad we had seen was one that had been hit by a car and it was so flat I think it was only about a millimetre tall. It was sitting in there sunbathing and when it saw us, it hid under a rock. There was also a massive boab tree there which was super tall. After we went to the Grotto, we left for Wyndham. When we got there, the first thing we did was have lunch at a bakery. I had barramundi pie which was really good. After the bakery, we went to the Wyndham Wharf which is on the ocean. The water was super brown and murky, but it was cool to be on the wharf because it was floating, and it rocked a lot like a boat. The next place we went to was a giant hill that went up 300 meters from the bottom. It had a really big view, and you could feel the pressure building in your ears as we went up the mountain. Then we went to a massive crocodile statue that was pretty cool. After that, we went to the Marlgu Billabong which had lots of birds and there were some algae on the water near the bank that looked like grass. On a branch over the water, there was another cane toad sitting near the water. It’s a bit strange that the only alive cane toads we have seen was in Western Australia and they aren’t supposed to be in WA. In the billabong, there is a super old crocodile that we saw come up for air. After we left the billabong, we drove back to Kununurra and we saw all the bats flying over. The sky was also a pinky red colour which looked really cool. After that we went to bed.
