Day 57 Coral Bay

When we got up, we went over to the beach and got onto a boat going out into the reef. The boat had a glass bottom so we could see all the coral and fish going under us. We stopped at a part that had a lot of coral going onto a big sandy bit with lots of spangled emperor swimming around. We went into the water and saw heaps of spangled emperor under us. Some were massive and I was surprised there were that many because spangled emperor is usually quite rare, and they are a 5 star eating fish. When we swam over the coral, we saw lots of parrot fish eating the coral and lots of flat tall fish hiding in the corals. We swam around for 30 minutes there but it felt like 2 seconds, and I was a bit sad to get back on the boat. After we went to that spot, we went further out to near the end of the reef. This spot was a bit sandier, and it had soft corals where most of the Ningaloo Reef has hard corals. Apparently, this was the best spot on the entire reef, and I could tell why because the first thing we saw was a turtle. He was sitting on the surface when I saw him and then he swam down into some of the corals and sat on the bottom. There was also another turtle on the sea floor, but he wasn’t swimming, so it was harder to see him. After that, we went to a ledge in the coral with heaps of massive spangled emperor swimming below it. Just around that, there was at least a hundred really thin and long fish all grouped together. We then came back to the boat and went to shore. After the boat ride, we swam in the beach. The good thing about this reef is that you can swim out to it from the shore without a boat. I saw heaps of coral and there was a bunch of parrot fish eating the coral and I could hear them crunching. I also swam over a giant spangled emperor. It was at least 65 – 70 cm long and I swam above for a while. When we left the beach, we came back to the van and bought some red emperor for dinner. Red emperor is very similar to spangled emperor, and it is another 5 star eating fish. We had red emperor fillets, and we pan fried it and it tasted really nice. Red emperor is one of my favourite fish to eat as they are so delicious. After we had dinner, we went to bed. Today was by far my favourite day of the trip and I knew it would be my favourite day before we even left home.
