Day 78 Wave Rock – Kalgoorlie
Today we packed up pretty early and then started driving to Kalgoorlie. It was a pretty short 4-hour drive to Kalgoorlie and the terrain didn’t change very much at all. We accidentally went onto a dirt road though and we had to follow it for 70 kilometres, so the van got super dirty. We arrived in Kalgoorlie at about 12 and there was dirt everywhere in the van. It was hard to put the stabilisers down because dirt had gotten into the mechanism and was making it really stiff. We had lunch after we set up the van and then we went into Kalgoorlie to look around. The first place we went to was the gold super mine. It was a massive open top gold mine which was big enough to fit the entire Tom Price mine in it. According to the signs, with every 1 trillion pounds of ore they excavate, they get 250 – 300 kilograms of gold which is about 19.8 million dollars. There were lots of ore carrying trucks driving down into the pit and there were also lots of trucks getting emptied of their loads. We drove out of the mine after that and went into the town to look for ice-cream because the temperature had heated up a lot. We spent a while walking around trying to find an ice-cream store and we only found a closed down one. Instead, we went into the supermarket and got ice-cream there. After that, we came back to the van and then stayed there until we went to bed.
